If it weren’t for my being hopelessly miscast, again as an old man, I’d look back on this production with fondness. It was purely an acting role, in an interesting play in which I had scenes with a wonderful actor — Tom Wilkinson. I didn’t have to write the music. That task belonged to Elaine Streeter, who did an excellent, distinctive job. The director was Jules Wright. Like Clare Venables, who was the artistic director of Stratford East at the time, Jules was a pioneering female making her way in what had become a male-dominated profession.
