This was the second Direct Current show. It had begun life as a late-night revue in Chester. Wendy Murray drafted a bitter-sweet autobiographical script about starting out as a professional performer, to which the rest of the cast — Jan Austen. Kevin Elyot, Annie Tyson and me — contributed the odd line. Colin Sell wrote the songs. It was probably slightly rewritten for its London outing at the Arts Theatre, but I can’t remember now. Colin wrote an outrageous duet for him and me to sing. It was called The Boys in the Band and featured a pair of loud, lascivious, sexist, boozy pit musicians. It still makes me laugh.
