Phyllida Lloyd and I met at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham. She rehearsed in such a different way to every other director I’d encountered, it took a while to get used to. The rehearsal room was like a theatrical laboratory. All solutions were temporary, since there might be a better way that had yet to be found. It was exciting and scary and, once I’d got used to not getting used to anything, exhilarating. She went on to do amazing things, taking me along when she could. My debt to her is incalculable.
